It's hard to believe that we're already past the halfway point of The Kerouac Crusade. We've gotten so accostumed to constantly being on the road that a 10-hour drive is no longer a big deal anymore. Actually, we've learned to really appreciate all the time we spend on the road together, whether in conversation, in silence, or in sleep. We both agree that one of the best aspects of traveling via car -as opposed to flying in a plane- is being able to observe the changes happening outside - with sights, smells, people, and places. Driving across America has truly been a fun and rewarding experience. Each state has something different to offer, including a unique personality. It's difficult to imagine that a state has a personality, but it's definitely something we've noticed through our travels. Because the environment is a representation of the people who inhabit it, the vibe we get from each place says a lot about the people who live there, and it's been interesting picking up on the nuances.
Today we made the trek from NC to FL. It was supposed to take about 8 and a half hours so we estimated it'd take us about 10 with traffic and rest stops. Due crazy car accidents in Georgia, we got held up in Savannah so long that it actually took us closer 12 hours. Talk about exhausting! We're so grateful that our hosts -The Hernandez Family- had dinner waiting for us when we arrived, since the last thing we ate was a F'real Smoothie from a gas station. And Riks' smoothie cup got forreal busted in the machine that's supposed to automatically make the smoothie.
After some lighthearted conversation with Caleb and Hillary (two of our lovely hosts), we've finally come upstairs to get ready for bed before another big volunteering day. Tomorrow we'll be driving into Orlando to help out with Clean the World!
Also, apologies, but we're currently backed up in Vlogs because Vimeo has a ridiculously small upload limit per week and we seemed to have maxed out ours until next Tuesday. So stayed tuned for our next video then!
[TKC Road Trip Pro-Tip #4: Sometimes it gets difficult staying awake during long drives, so if you need to, pull-over and switch drivers (hopefully, you're driving with a buddy), or try keeping yourself occupied by munching on snacks or singing out loud to music. Really though, pull-over if you have to. Better safe than sorry.]
Happy Friday the 13th and hello Sunshine State!
